Commission in Payslips

Automatically include sales commissions in payslips

The Commission in Payslips module automatically includes sales commissions in employee payslips. It bridges the gap between the Sales Commission module and Payroll, ensuring that salespeople receive their earned commissions through the regular payroll process.

The module supports automatic commission inclusion, multi-currency support with currency conversion, flexible grouping by different payroll input types, and date-based filtering to only include commissions earned during the payslip period.

Getting Started

Prerequisites:

Key points

  • Sale Commission Module is installed and configured

  • Payroll Module is installed and configured

  • Commission plans are set up with rates and rules

  • Employees have user accounts linked (for commission tracking)

  • Payroll input types are configured for commissions

Configuring Commission Plans

To include commissions in payslips, you must configure each commission plan with a payroll input type.

Steps

  • 1. Navigate to Sales → Configuration → Commission Plans

  • 2. Open an existing commission plan or create a new one

  • 3. Configure the standard commission settings: plan name, commission rate, applicable products/categories, target employees/teams

  • 4. Link to Payroll Input: Locate the Payslip Input field, select the appropriate payroll input type (e.g., "Sales Commission", "Bonus Commission"), save the commission plan

Payroll Input Types

Payroll input types determine how commissions appear on payslips and how they're taxed.

Key points

  • Common input types: Sales Commission (regular sales commissions), Bonus Commission (special or one-time bonuses), Override Commission (manual commission adjustments)

  • To create new input types: Go to Payroll → Configuration → Input Types, click New, enter Name and Code, save

  • Grouping commissions: Commissions are automatically grouped by their payroll input type. Different input types appear as separate lines on the payslip

How Commissions Appear in Payslips

When you generate a payslip, the system automatically:

Key points

  • Viewing commissions on payslips: Open a payslip, scroll to the Other Inputs section, commission lines appear with description (the payroll input type name), amount (total commission for that input type), currency (payslip currency after conversion)

  • Commission date range: Commissions are included based on their payment date - only commissions with payment date between payslip start and end dates are included

Steps

  • 1. Searches for Commissions: Finds all commissions earned by the employee during the payslip period

  • 2. Filters by Plan: Only includes commissions from plans with a payroll input configured

  • 3. Groups by Input Type: Sums commissions by their payroll input type

  • 4. Converts Currency: Converts commission amounts to the payslip currency if needed

  • 5. Creates Input Lines: Adds commission amounts as input lines on the payslip

Workflow

Standard payroll process with commissions:

Steps

  • 1. Sales Period: Sales team closes deals, commissions are calculated by the Sale Commission module, commission records are created with payment dates

  • 2. Commission Plan Configuration: Sales Manager ensures commission plans have payroll input types configured, different commission types can use different input types

  • 3. Payslip Generation: Payroll Manager generates payslips for the period, system automatically queries commission records, commissions are filtered by date range and employee, currency conversion is applied if needed, input lines are created on payslips

  • 4. Review: Payroll Manager reviews payslips, verifies commission amounts match expectations, checks that all eligible commissions are included

  • 5. Processing: Payslips are confirmed, commissions are paid through regular payroll, tax withholding is applied to commission amounts

Troubleshooting

Key points

  • Commissions Not Appearing on Payslip: Commission plan doesn't have a payroll input type configured, commission payment date is outside the payslip period, employee doesn't have a user account linked, commission hasn't been validated/confirmed. Solutions: Check commission plan configuration, verify commission payment dates, confirm employee-user link, check commission status

  • Wrong Commission Amount: Currency conversion issue, multiple commission plans with same input type, commission amount was modified after payslip generation. Solutions: Check currency settings, review commission breakdown, regenerate payslip if needed

  • Commission Appears Twice: Payslip was regenerated without deleting old input lines. Solution: Open the payslip, go to Other Inputs tab, delete duplicate commission lines, or delete and regenerate the entire payslip

  • Currency Conversion Issues: Commission amount seems incorrect, amount doesn't match commission report. Solutions: Verify exchange rates are configured, confirm conversion date (system uses payslip end date), review commission currency

Best Practices

Key points

  • For Sales Managers: Configure input types early before the first payroll period, use clear descriptive names for input types, group logically for commissions that should be reported or taxed differently, document which plans use which input types

  • For Payroll Managers: Verify before confirming (always review commission amounts before confirming payslips), check date ranges (ensure payslip periods align with commission payment schedules), monitor currency rates (keep exchange rates up to date), reconcile monthly (compare payslip commission totals with commission reports)

  • For System Administrators: Set up input types (create standard payroll input types for common commission scenarios), configure currencies (maintain accurate exchange rates if dealing with multi-currency commissions), train users (ensure Sales and Payroll teams understand the integration), test first (test the integration with a small group before rolling out company-wide)

  • Common pitfalls to avoid: Don't forget to link (always set the payslip input field on commission plans), don't mix periods (ensure commission payment dates align with payroll periods), don't skip review (always verify commission amounts before processing payroll), don't ignore currency (pay attention to currency conversion when applicable)

Frequently Asked Questions

Key points

  • Can I manually adjust commission amounts on payslips? Yes, you can edit the input line amounts on the payslip before confirming. However, this doesn't change the commission records

  • What happens if I change a commission plan's input type? Future payslips will use the new input type. Existing payslips are not affected

  • Can one employee have multiple commission plans? Yes, commissions from all plans are included. They're grouped by input type on the payslip

  • How are commissions taxed? Commissions are taxed according to your payroll rules and the salary structure. They're treated as regular income

  • Can I exclude certain commissions from payroll? Yes, simply don't set a payslip input type on the commission plan. Those commissions won't appear in payslips

  • What if commission payment date doesn't match payslip period? The commission will appear in the payslip that covers its payment date, not when it was earned

  • Can I see a breakdown of which deals contributed to the commission? The payslip shows the total. For details, check the Commission Report in the Sales module
