MRP Module (Manufacturing)

Manage the entire production process from BoM to finished goods

The MRP (Manufacturing Resource Planning) module is the core module for managing the entire manufacturing process in Odoo.

This module allows you to create and manage Bills of Materials (BoM), plan and execute manufacturing orders, manage work centers and work orders, track material consumption and finished product production.

Managing Bills of Materials (BoM)

A Bill of Materials defines the materials and operations needed to manufacture a product.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Manufacturing → Products → Bill of Materials.

  • 2. Click Create to create a new BoM.

  • 3. Select Product (finished product) and enter Quantity (production quantity).

  • 4. Choose BoM Type: Manufacture (standard production), Kit (product bundle), or Subcontracting (outsourced).

  • 5. In the Components tab, add materials by clicking Add a line.

  • 6. In the Operations tab (if Work Orders enabled), add operations with Work Center and expected duration.

  • 7. Click Save to save the BoM.


Creating Manufacturing Orders

A Manufacturing Order is an order to produce a specific quantity of a product based on a BoM.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Manufacturing → Operations → Manufacturing Orders.

  • 2. Click Create to create a new order.

  • 3. Select Product (product to manufacture) and enter Quantity.

  • 4. Select Bill of Material (automatic if only 1 BoM exists).

  • 5. Enter Scheduled Date (expected completion date).

  • 6. Click Confirm to confirm the manufacturing order.


Production Workflow

Manufacturing orders go through states from Draft to Done.

Managing Work Centers

A Work Center represents machinery, areas, or employee groups that perform production operations.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Manufacturing → Configuration → Work Centers.

  • 2. Click Create to create a new work center.

  • 3. Enter Work Center Name (e.g., Cutting Machine, Welding Machine).

  • 4. Configure Working Hours, Time Efficiency (%), and Capacity (number of machines/people).

  • 5. Enter Costs per hour to calculate production costs.

  • 6. Click Save to save.


Unbuild - Disassembling Products

Unbuild is used to disassemble finished products into materials, useful when products are defective and components need to be reused or when design changes occur.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Manufacturing → Operations → Unbuild Orders.

  • 2. Click Create to create an unbuild order.

  • 3. Select Product (product to disassemble) and enter Quantity.

  • 4. Select Bill of Material reference.

  • 5. Choose Source Location (warehouse for finished products) and Destination Location (warehouse for materials).

  • 6. Click Unbuild to execute.


Integration with Inventory

Key points

  • When MO is confirmed, the system checks inventory and triggers Reordering Rules if materials are short.

  • System automatically creates Purchase Orders (if route is Buy) or Manufacturing Orders (if route is Manufacture).

  • Each MO creates stock moves for components (from Stock → Production) and finished products (from Production → Stock).

  • Use Lot/Serial Numbers for traceability: see which MO produced this lot, which component lots were used.


Practical Tips

Key points

  • Standardize BoMs: Ensure BoMs reflect actual processes for accurate cost calculation.

  • Use Work Centers: Track performance of each machine/department with OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).

  • Configure Reordering Rules: Automatically order when materials are short to avoid production interruptions.

  • Use Lot/Serial: Track traceability for critical products, especially in food and pharmaceutical industries.

  • Check Availability before production: Avoid mid-production shortages by checking inventory first.

  • Partial Production: Produce in parts if materials are short, create Backorders for remaining quantities.

  • Scrap promptly: Record scrap for accurate inventory and correct production cost calculation.
