ESG Module (Environment, Social, Governance)

Manage and report ESG impact per GHG Protocol with automated calculation from accounting data.

ESG module provides carbon emission tracking per GHG Protocol (Scope 1, 2, 3), auto-calculating from vendor bills.

Uses certified emission databases (ADEME, IPCC), manages emission factors, and generates detailed carbon footprint reports.

Key Features

Key points

  • Track carbon emissions per GHG Protocol standard (Scope 1, 2, 3).

  • Auto-calculate emissions from vendor bills.

  • Manual emission entry for non-accounting activities.

  • Use ADEME database (10,000+ factors) and IPCC standards.

  • Manage emission factors and automatic assignment rules.

  • Generate detailed carbon footprint reports by scope and source.

Configure Emission Sources

System provides hierarchical emission source structure per GHG Protocol with main sources like Stationary/Mobile Combustion, Process/Fugitive Emissions (Scope 1), Purchased Electricity/Steam (Scope 2), and 15 Scope 3 categories including Purchased Goods, Business Travel, Employee Commuting, Waste, Transportation.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Configuration → Emission Sources to view hierarchy.

  • 2. Select emission source matching activity to track.

  • 3. View emission factors related to each source.

  • 4. Use this source when creating emission factors or manual entries.

Manage Emission Factors

Key points

  • Factors can calculate by physical quantity (km, kWh, kg) or monetary value.

  • Use Assignations tab to create auto-assignment rules by Product, Partner, Account.

  • Use Audit Emissions button to view all emissions using this factor.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Configuration → Emission Factors and click New.

  • 2. Fill Name, Code, select Emission Source (Scope 1/2/3).

  • 3. Choose Compute Method: Physically (by quantity) or Monetary (by currency).

  • 4. Enter Emissions (kgCO₂e) and Uncertainty (%) if available.

  • 5. Set Valid From/To to manage factor versions.

  • 6. In Gas Emissions tab, break down by gas (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, HFC).

Auto-track Emissions from Accounting

When receiving vendor bills, system auto-assigns emission factors based on rules (product, partner, account) and calculates: Quantity × Factor = kgCO₂e.

Steps

  • 1. Open vendor bill in Accounting → Invoices.

  • 2. Click Emissions button to view total bill emissions.

  • 3. View line details: Emission Factor, Emissions (kgCO₂e), Uncertainty.

  • 4. If factor not auto-assigned, manually select from Emission Factor field.

Manual Emission Entry

For emissions not related to accounting like business travel, employee commuting, or activities without invoices.

Key points

  • Use Offset Emissions to record carbon offset activities (tree planting, credit purchase).

  • Offset factors have negative values to reduce total emissions.

Steps

  • 1. Go to Collect → Carbon Emissions → Emitted Emissions.

  • 2. Click New and fill Name, Date, Date End (if period).

  • 3. Select Emission Factor matching the activity.

  • 4. Enter Quantity and Unit of Measure.

  • 5. System auto-calculates emissions based on factor.

Automatic Factor Assignment Rules

Steps

  • 1. Open emission factor needing auto-assignment.

  • 2. In Assignations tab, click Add a line.

  • 3. Select criteria: Product (specific product), Partner (supplier), Account (accounting account).

  • 4. Can combine multiple criteria for precise assignment.

  • 5. Use Assign Emission Factors for batch assignment by time period.

Emission Databases

Key points

  • ADEME (French Environment Agency): 10,000+ certified factors.

  • IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel): International greenhouse gas standards.

  • Go to Configuration → Source Databases to download and update.

  • System auto-imports factors into Emission Factors list.

Reports and Analytics

Key points

  • Dashboard: Emission overview by Scope, 12-month trends, emissions needing identification.

  • Carbon Analytics: Emission charts by Scope, source, time with flexible filters.

  • Carbon Footprint: Hierarchical report by Scope → Source → Gas (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O).

  • Pivot/Graph views: Multi-dimensional analysis and data export.

Understanding GWP (Global Warming Potential)

GWP is an index comparing global warming impact of a gas to CO₂ over 100 years. Formula: Gas mass × GWP = kgCO₂e.

GWP Coefficients for Main Gases

GasCodeGWPExample
Carbon DioxideCO₂1Comparison standard
MethaneCH₄2828 times CO₂ warming
Nitrous OxideN₂O265265 times CO₂ warming
HFC-134aHFC-134a3,710Refrigerant
Sulfur HexafluorideSF₆23,500Insulating gas

Best Practices

Key points

  • Configure assignment rules for common products/partners to automate.

  • Load ADEME/IPCC databases for accurate and updated factors.

  • Regularly check invoices without emission factors.

  • Update factors over time as values change.

  • Analyze Scope 1, 2, 3 separately to comply with GHG Protocol.

  • Record factor uncertainty to assess reliability.

  • Use Audit Emissions to verify data sources.
